It's cold and breezy and trying hard to snow this morning, so naturally I'm baking a pie. Hey, what husband is going to argue that I should be outside working, instead?
My grandmothers on both sides of the family were excellent pie bakers, and I was lucky enough to spend enough time lurking in their kitchens to learn their secrets. When my Grandma Hoyt's house was sold, the aunt who had inherited it invited us all to come by and pick out any of her remaining belongings that meant something special to us. Guess what I chose?
Grandma Hoyt would always trim off the extra pie dough from the crust and give it to me to roll out for strawberry jam tarts or what we call pie crackers, which is just a piece of dough sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and baked to crispy perfection. Of course, the trick to pie crackers is the ability to make really, really good crust.
So here's a big thanks to both of my grandmothers. Yum.
